Parthenope Mystical Necklace

$120.00

According to ancient local Neapolitan legend, Parthenope was an “pure-voiced” mermaiden who lived among the rocks in the middle of the sea. After suffering from unrequited love for the hero Ulysses, Parthenope tragically drowned herself in the sea, and the waves carried her body to the gulf of Naples, Italy, where her body dissolved, taking shape in the city of Naples: her head is the hill of Capodimonte and her tail lays along the hill of Posillipo.

When the Greeks settled the area in the second millennium BC, the original name of the city was Parthenope, after this Greek siren, and was later renamed Napoli, the new city.

The statue of the mermaid Parthenope that inspired this piece can be found at the Piazza Sannazaro in Naples, Italy.

This majestic necklace features bright chalcedony gemstone and assorted aquatic-inspired collected vintage glass beads, finished with a solid brass filigree fishhook style clasp.
